How digital coupons work: loading them, limits, and using them in store

A digital coupon is a coupon that lives on your store account instead of on paper. You add it on the store’s website or app, and it comes off at checkout when the store knows it’s you. There’s nothing to print, cut out or hand over.

That sounds simple, and mostly it is. But each store has its own rules about how many coupons you can hold, how often you can use them and what you need to do at the register. This guide walks through all three, with examples taken from the stores’ own help pages.

Step 1: Load the coupon to your account

Every store’s coupon page has a button on each offer. Depending on the store it says Clip, Load or Add. Pressing it attaches the offer to your loyalty account. Stores use different words for the same idea: Kroger loads digital coupons to your Shopper’s Card, Publix has you clip them to your Club Publix account, and Walgreens clips paperless coupons to your myWalgreens account.

You need an account first. Hannaford says you must have a Hannaford online account to use digital coupons, and Walgreens says the same of myWalgreens. Joining is usually free: Publix, for example, says there is no charge to join Club Publix or to use digital coupons.

The most important rule: load the coupon before you buy the item. A coupon you didn’t add won’t come off. The for U FAQ on Vons, Andronico’s, Kings and Balducci’s says to add offers before shopping in store or online, and that new accounts take 15 minutes to activate. At Raley’s, both the store’s personalized offers and the manufacturer coupons have to be clipped before they can be redeemed.

How soon a clipped coupon works

Usually right away. Kroger says digital coupons are available as soon as you load them. Hannaford says they’re typically available within a few minutes, but it could take longer depending on your device’s connection. Either way, clip at home before you shop, not in the checkout line.

Step 2: Know the limits

Digital coupons come with a few different kinds of limits. It helps to know which one you’re running into.

How many coupons your account can hold at once. Some stores cap it. Kroger caps how many Cash Back Offers and Digital Coupons your household can hold at once, and expired and redeemed offers don’t count toward that. Meijer allows 160 clipped coupons at one time. Walgreens has a limit too and shows a warning at the top of its Paperless Coupons page as you approach it. Others don’t: asked whether there’s a limit on the number of coupons you can clip, Publix answers “No.”

How many times you can use each coupon. Most are single use. Publix says it’s up to the manufacturer, but most coupons can be used only once. At Walgreens each coupon can be redeemed once. Vons, Andronico’s, Kings and Balducci’s split offers into Unlimited offers, which work in any number of transactions, and One-time offers, which work in one.

What you have to buy. Many offers need a certain size, variety or quantity. Some have quantity limits of their own. H-E-B says each digital coupon shows its own redemption limits, so read the offer before you count on it.

Dates. Every coupon has an end date, and some have a start date. Kroger says each coupon shows its expiration date, and expired coupons are no longer active on your card. Walgreens coupons expire at 11:59 p.m. in the time zone of the store where you redeem them. H-E-B can’t accept a coupon whose start date hasn’t come yet.

Where you can use it. Kroger digital coupons work at any store in the Kroger family, as long as the product is in stock. At Vons, Andronico’s, Kings and Balducci’s, an offer works in the store selected in your account when you added it.

Removing coupons to make room. Check your store’s rule before you unclip anything. Kroger lets you remove most coupons from your card without using them. Walgreens warns that once a coupon is unclipped it can no longer be clipped.

Step 3: Use the coupons at checkout

In store there’s nothing to hand over. You just tell the register who you are, and the coupons on your account come off any qualifying items. How you do that depends on the store:

  • Kroger: scan your Shopper’s Card or enter your Alt ID. The discount shows on your receipt under the item as “ecpn”.
  • Publix: enter your 10-digit phone number on the PIN pad. Your savings are itemized on your receipt.
  • CVS: give the associate your phone number instead of your ExtraCare card.
  • Walgreens: enter your phone number, or have the associate scan the Walgreens app.
  • Hannaford: give your phone number or account barcode.

Online orders vary. Raley’s says clipped offers apply automatically whether you buy in store or online; Vons, Andronico’s, Kings and Balducci’s say to enter your phone number before checking out online. If you mostly order for pickup or delivery, check your store’s help page.

When a coupon doesn’t come off

Run through this list:

  1. Was the coupon on the same account you gave at checkout?
  2. Did you buy exactly what the offer asks for: brand, size, variety and quantity?
  3. Was it in date on the day you shopped?
  4. Had you already used it? Most coupons are single use.
  5. Did a paper coupon go on the same item? At Publix, if a paper coupon is accepted, the digital coupon isn’t used and stays in your account for later.

If all of that checks out, take your receipt to customer service.

Where OttoClipper fits

The slow part of all this is step 1. A store can have a long list of offers, each with its own button. OttoClipper is a Chrome extension, with a free plan, that presses those buttons for you on the store’s own website, at 100+ stores. We never see your store passwords. You sign in on the store’s own site, like always. It doesn’t change any store’s rules: the limits above still apply.

FAQ

Do I need a loyalty card to use digital coupons?

You need an account with the store. At most stores that’s the loyalty program, and you identify yourself at checkout with a card, an app barcode or a phone number.

Can I use a digital coupon more than once?

Usually not. Most digital coupons are single use. Some stores also have offers you can use again, and the offer will say so.

Do digital coupons work on online orders?

At many stores, yes, but not all, and the rules differ. Check your store’s help page.

Can my family use the coupons on my account?

It depends on the store. Publix says each Club Publix account has one registered user, but the whole household can use it by entering the same phone number at checkout.

Why did a coupon disappear from my account?
